QUITE NEW INTERPRETATIONS
BERLIN, 6th FEBRUARY 2006
Nice show. I enjoyed myself a lot. Apart from the
acoustics of the venue, everything was so exciting.
It started with Alice Cooper. I saw them live for the
first time. I liked them though their antics with a
coffin, a guillotine, imitations of legs, were
detestable. Other acts with pearls, false dollars or big
balloons, were awesome. Costumes were funny. Intriguing
band!
But I couldn't wait for Deep Purple. Happily, they weren't
too late. They were cool, as usual. Ian Gillan's condition
was great though his voice sounded a bit creaky. I'm sure
the bad acoustics of the venue are to blame. Independently
of all, Mr Gillan must have been well prepared because he
made three mistakes only. Of course, in "Perfect
Strangers" again:))).
The hall was full of fans. Nobody could wait for new
songs. We liked "Pictures of Home", but we wanted to see
how "Junkyard Blues" or "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" would
sound on the stage.
The old stuff was played it in a very original way,
especially "Pictures of Home". I've never heard such a
performance. It sounded as if I listened to new
songs... So did "Ted the Mechanic". I was surprised and
lost in admiration.
The scenery was unusual, too. A big screen with a
reproduction of the new DP album and two smaller screens
on the right and left sides, with extraordinary lights
projected. These lights were the most beautiful.
Six new songs sounded great although I didn't like "Before
Time Began". But I think Ian Gillan will never give up
singing it at concerts. He seems to be very proud of this
track.
Don Airey played very cool and originally, especially his
organ solo. I haven't heard him to play this way so
far. His "Living Wreck" sounded as if Jon Lord played it!
Steve Morse's play was excellent, too. "Contact Lost"
turned smoothly into an unusual "cosmic" solo, then into
"The Well Dressed Guitar"... He was always changing his
guitars. I saw two new violet ones:)
It was very kind of the band to play "Things I Never
Said". I had an opportunity to hear a piece unavailable in
European shops. Very nice nice track, I listened to it
with a big pleasure.
The band invited another musician again. Good idea. Deep
Purple are very hospitable! Uli Jon Roth played "Black
Night" with them and he did it well, but he seemed to be
very shy. Why?
In general, the show was uncommonly exciting. New scenery,
new songs, new performance... and new Steve's guitars.
What can I say finally? I was dead tired of my journey to
Berlin, but very happy to see mu favourite band. I like
Deep Purple gigs so much. Many thanks and see you in
Poland!
